The Costs of Moving Day

So you’ve just bought/rented a new place and you’re preparing yourself for a big move! You’re ready for the costs of living in your new place, and you’re building up your excitement for starting life somewhere new! But have you stopped to think about and budget for the costs of moving day? Moving house can be a very expensive endeavor, especially if you there’s something you’ve completely forgotten to take into consideration and have to scramble to make last minute arrangements. Don’t let moving day break your bank. Here are the costs you can plan to incur:

 

Removal Costs:
Moving all of your stuff from one place to another is time consuming and costly. If you plan on moving everything yourself make sure you budget for the cost of packing materials and a moving van. If the thought of packing and moving all of your stuff seems too daunting, you’ll have to hire movers. While making life much easier on you, it will also cost you a lot more. Make sure to shop around for a reasonably priced company, but also make sure it’s a reputable company!

 

Family Needs:
Do you have kids or pets that you think will only get in the way come moving day? Unless you have friends or family who would be willing to watch them for a few hours, you’ll need to pay professionals to take them off your hands while you sort everything else out.

 

Cleaning:
You might want to clean the new place you’re moving to, in addition to making sure that the place you’ve left is spic and span. If you want to save yourself a bit of money you could clean one or both places yourself, or if you have enough money in the budget you could hire a company to do it for you. Make sure that you aren’t leaving a mess behind you, and that you aren’t moving into one.

Travel:
Depending on how far you’re moving, you’ll need to make sure you budget enough money to get all the family there. If travelling by plane becomes a necessity your travel costs will most likely become much higher. If travelling a long distance by car you might need to stop overnight in a hotel. Either way don’t forget to add travel expenses into your moving day budget.

 

The costs of moving day are very dependent upon your situation and how much work you want to do yourself. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed and swamped it’d be much easier for you to pay other people to help you move, but just make sure you’ve budgeted for it. If you’re moving for work make sure you know about any stipend your company might offer to help you with the costs.
